Kings High School Women's Chorale
inspired by new baby Piano
Black Weber 5-foot, 9-inch baby grand piano is more than a
beautiful instrument for the Kings High School Women's Chorale,
"The piano makes everyone enthusiastic and it uplifts us as we
sing," said sophomore Jessica Fox.
Her classmate Angela Sizemore agrees." It livened everyone up.
The piano sounds so bright. It's really something to be proud
of."
These girls aren't just excited about having a new instrument,
they've inspired themselves by being a big part of paying for
the new instrument by selling home interior candles and raising
about $2,000.
They get absolutely giddy when they talk about the new
instrument.
"This is probably the biggest accomplishment we've done in the
four years I've been here," said senior Samantha Fox.
"Miss Milthaler said we're street sweepers. We work really hard
for what we have and even if we're just street sweepers, 'you
sweep those streets.'"
While the Kings High School choral department already had a baby
grand piano, it was worn with age, and distressed from being
rolled out of the rehearsal room, down a ramp and onto the stage
every time there was a performance.
The choir still uses the piano for rehearsal, and reserves the
new instrument for performance.
"We still love that piano. It's our old dog and this is our new
puppy," said choral director Hope Milthaler with a toothy smile.
Through donations from parents, and a $3,000 personal check from
Kings Superintendent Chuck Mason, the piano was bought and
recently debuted at the first choral concert of the year last
week.
The debut was Allison Heil's favorite part of the performance.
"They did an introduction for the piano, then they threw open
the curtain and started singing 'Celebrate,'" she said
enthusiastically.
But the most important part of getting the new piano isn't
getting the new piano, Milthaler said.
"The support we received in order to purchase it has validated
their participation in choir. Outside people have shown support
that basically has shown they believe that choir is a worthwhile
place for the kids to spend their time."
Milthaler said that since Mason gave personal money to buy the
piano, district administration is still considering the
allocation of $3,000 to the choir for things the choir needs.
Choir robes in bad condition need replaced and more of them need
to be bought since the choir has grown since the last purchase.
Old risers the choir stands on while performing are now too
unsafe to use, said Milthaler.
"To support our growth, there are things that we have to have to
sustain our growth and ensure we're performing at the same level
as other districts)," she said.
"If they do their best they should have the best. It really does
affect performance. We need to show them they're just as
important as other programs around by providing these things."
