Billy Joel the Piano legend rocked at
Bellville Velodrome
Bellville Velodrome: Billy Joel's superb showmanship
rocked the full house. Throughout the show the upbeat crowd
drifted between feelings of ecstasy and nostalgia as the
legendary singer and song-writer belted out one favorite after
the other.
And there was not a soul who didn't sing along, tap their feet
or shake their booty to his repertoire. And the Piano legend
didn't disappoint on this instrument either - fans applauded
minutes on end after a spell on the ebonies and ivories.
Billy's first time in South Africa and the show was part
of his world tour, for which he apologized last night: "I'm
really sorry it took me so long to come to South Africa."
The lyrics of all-time favorite Honesty, he professed,
were unlike his other songs which doesn't really mean anything,"
he told the disbelieving fans. With a first class eight-piece
backing band, including a four-piece horn set, Billy went on to
other favorites such as We Didn't Start the Fire, River of
Dreams, New York State of Mind, Just the Way You Are, before
giving encores with Uptown Girl and Piano Man.
His popularity is demonstrated in the accolades he has
gathered.
He is a six-time Grammy Award winner who has sold in excess of
100 million records.
He recently set the record for selling out New York's Madison
Square Gardens for 12 consecutive nights, beating Bruce
Springsteen's 10 consecutive nights.
So popular was Billy in Johannesburg that a second show was
scheduled. Now Cape Town fans are hoping the musical gods will
smile on them too.
