Musical Pleasure of Santoor by Pandit Shivkumar

Indore city is all set to experience musical pleasure when legendary Pandit Shivkumar Sharma and a young and talented tabla player Rimpa Siva will perform at the Yashwant Club on Sunday evening.

Pandit Shivkumar Sharma known for his art and Rimpa as a tabla player, whose fingers run fast leaving telling effect on the minds of listeners.

The fifth and sole Idea and Indian Musical Academy sponsored Jalsa is a novel step, a move to attract and aware people of the city about traditional Indian classical music. This idea was the brainchild of art and artistes, a musical body in Mumbai.

Speaking on the occasion, the spokesperson of IMA, Durga Jasraj said that the aim of Jalsa is to preserve and protect different music of India and also to familiarise masses with the classical music.

She said the body which is in existence for seven years has planned 12 Jalsas all over country and IMA feels great pleasure to be in Indore, a city known for its contribution to music for years.

She made it clear that the idea behind this show is to bring legendary musicians of Hindustani and Carnatik together on a platform and IMA has got success with leading artistes performed in previous Jalsas.

She said the IMA is also doing its best to provide medical aid with the help of noted doctors and famous hospitals in the country to provide timely medical aid to the needy and helpless musicians who have no money. But at the same time she said that only can avail medi aid who have a professional track record of at least 10 years.

She said that the objective of this jalsas is to provide a platform to the young talents of Indian music lovers and IMA has been formed keeping in view the goal to motivate and inspire the younger generation to take up Indian Music as a profession and also to take pride in carrying forward the rich legacy of Indian culture, heritage and traditional music all over the world.

World-renowned santoor maestro Pandit Shiv Kumar Sharma, who will enthrall Indore people on Sunday night, while speaking to the media, said he was highly glad to be in the city which has produced music stalwarts melody queen Lata Mangeshkar and Aamir Sahib and many others.

He was all praise for the city which has always showed keen interest in the innovation and move with pace of time.

Pandit Sharma said that he feels pride that Indian Classical Music is getting enormous and large following in the foreign countries but he will like to see the traditional music to be a part and parcel of Indian people.

He said the IMA is doing a yemon job in promoting and opening avenues for the upcoming and unknown artistes.

He said an artiste is neither made in a single day nor any mantra to produce an instant musician. In fact, great artistes come to the fore after long practice and devotion, and with the help of guru who makes his disciple a noted personality.

A born music lover Pandit Sharma said that he is not allergic to the new trend in modern music but he said that this western-influenced music lasts temporary. It can never match the height and feel of classical music, so Indian music will be always a soothing balm for the people.

Asked if Indian music has any impact on the masses, he said yes it has as it is not like pop, rap or re-mix that excites people, in fact it enters your heart and transports to the people to a new world of peace and pleasure. He also said that this music can't be borrowed or purchased. This is invented and practiced constantly, he added.

He said that IMA is the brainchild of Durga Jasraj and Vikram Shankar, directors of Art and Artistes, an entertainment firm, which has dedicated itself to the resoration and welfare of the Indian Music and Culture.

The founder members of the academy are Pandit Jasraj, Pandit Shivkumar Sharma and Javed Akhtar. The patrons of IMA are: Pandit Hariprasad Chaurasia, Ustad Amjad Ali Khan, Asha Bhosle, Ustad Zakir Hussain, Dr Balmurli Krishna, Dr Lalgudi Jayraman, Pyarelalji.

Lata Mangeshkar and Pandit Ravi Shankar are its honorary patrons.
